For international students who do not meet degree program entry requirements because of English language proficiency or level of academic attainment, the University offers a number of preparatory programs through its Language Centre and foundation studies program.
Since 1988, the University’s Language Centre has offered English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) to applicants whose English proficiency does not meet University requirements. All of the Centre's courses are accredited by the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme, and the Centre is a member of English Australia and the University English Centres of Australia. The Centre is also an official test centre for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
High quality services are available to all students through the Centre’s excellent facilities, including purpose designed language, video and computer laboratories and private study and resource areas, which are all available to students 8:00am to 8:00pm, Monday to Friday.
The range of courses the Centre offers to international students, the extensive experience of its staff in teaching international students from a large variety of overseas countries and their close liaison with other academic staff throughout the University is also of particular note.
So too is its location – in the heart of the Callaghan campus with easy access to all main University facilities, including the main Auchmuty Library and the Student Union building with its many cafeterias, shops and other essential student services.
A further feature of the Language Centre is its close working relationship with Community Services, which together offer each student the opportunity to have an Australian 'buddy' who will assist them with conversational English and in learning more about Australian culture. The 'buddies' come from a variety of backgrounds - students, young married couples with children and elderly people within the community. Staff arrange the initial introduction and it is up to each student and the 'buddy' to further develop their relationship.
