Teaching Facilities
The School teaches law courses at both Callaghan Campus and University House. Commonly a law course will involve three or four hours of face to face teaching a week. First year combined Law degree students undertake 10 hours of classes per week in law courses and between 6 and 12 hours of classes in non-law courses. First year graduate LLB students undertake 18 hours of classes a week in first semester and 16 hours a week in second semester.
Many classes at Callaghan are taught from the Harris Wheeler Court Room and Lecture Room, which was established by a donation from the Newcastle law firm, Harris Wheeler. Students also have access to a 32-seat computer laboratory and seminar room adjacent to the Harris Wheeler Court Room.
The teaching facilities at University House comprise a tiered lecture theatre, a mock court room, seminar and tutorial rooms and library.
Law Library
The Law Library plays a significant role in the teaching and research functions of the School of Law. The law collection is located in the main library, the Auchmuty Library. The Librarian for the Faculty of Business and Law is Ann Stokes. Ruth Talbot-Stokes is the Law Librarian. The Law Library is also staffed by a full-time and two part-time Library Technicians.
The collection has developed since the School's inception and currently comprises almost 50,000 volumes. The library subscribes to the major law reports, legislation, loose-leaf services and law journals. The library holds a substantial collection of law texts (approximately 10,000 titles) mostly from major common law jurisdictions, and a number of data bases in both bibliographic and full text format. Substantial use is being made of electronically delivered primary material and journals.
The School also maintains a small library at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre which aims to satisfy the information needs of a busy legal practice as well as those of the student population located at University House.
