Research Scholarships

In addition to the many research scholarships and awards available to students at the University of Newcastle, the Faculty has in place a range of scholarships for student researchers at every level. Information is also kept up-to-date in Blackboard for current RHD students for the following scholarships and awards:

We have also developed information about a range of Current Topics that have been identified as being of interest to the various research units in the Faculty. The more advanced you are in your research training, the more you determine the direction of your research, and students are encouraged to discuss their interests with our staff.

Faculty Undergraduate Summer Scholarships
(2008/09 applications close 14 November 2008)

The Faculty of Science and IT Undergraduate Summer Scholarship program is established to enable talented students to explore the world of research. Scholarship holders will undertake research projects over a 6-week placement.

An Undergraduate Summer research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments. This program is an early introduction to aspects of Honours Year research. Please see information about the Current Topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty.

For 2009 there are up to 35 of these scholarships valued at $2,000 each, with further information available in the Summer Scholarships 2008/09 information brochure. For information on conditions, including how to apply, please see the Scholarships website.

Faculty Undergraduate Visiting Scholarships
(2008/09 applications close 14 November 2008)

The Faculty of Science and IT Undergraduate Visiting Scholarship program is established to enable talented students from other universities to explore the world of research. Scholarship holders will undertake research projects over a 6-week placement at the University of Newcastle during summer.

An Undergraduate Visiting research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments. This program is an early introduction to aspects of Honours Year research. Please see information about the Current Topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty.

The scholarship includes a $1,500 stipend, accommodation and return transportation within Australia, plus assistance with local resources. Faculty Honours Scholarships
(2009 applications close 31 October 2008)

The Faculty of Science and IT Honours Scholarship is established to encourage and support undergraduate students entering an Honours program with the aim of progressing to a Research Higher Degree offered by the Faculty of Science and Information Technology.

An Honours program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with the necessary experience and knowledge working closely with well-established researchers in high quality research environments, for progression to a Research Higher Degree program if they so wish. For 2009 there are up to 20 of these scholarships valued at $2,000 each, with further information available in the Honours Scholarships 2009 information brochure. For information on conditions, including how to apply, please see the Scholarships website.

Faculty Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award
(2009 applications close 31 October 2008)

The Faculty of Science and IT Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award is available to an RHD candidate undertaking a full-time research Master’s or PhD degree within the Faculty of Science and Information Technology. The applicant must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and an Australian Citizen.

The successful applicant will receive a living allowance (AUD$20,007 per annum in 2008)for the duration of the scholarship. This period is three (3) years for a PhD degree or two (2) years for a Master’s degree by research. Please see information about the Current Topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty.

Faculty RHD Conference Scholarships

The Research Higher Degree Student Conference Scholarship provides Faculty support for Master of Science (Research) or PhD candidates of the Faculty to participate in an International Conference/Exhibition in order to present their research to the international community. Only one Scholarship will be awarded to any one applicant during the term of their candidature, and will not be awarded to candidates retrospectively.

The Scholarship is restricted to Conferences/Exhibitions, which are organized by an International Committee (whether in Australia or Overseas). The applicant should have authored, co-authored a refereed scientific article(s) or exhibited at a significant venue (solo or group). The Faculty Research & Research Training Committee views these Scholarships as being prestigious, so its award should be included on the testamur and could be used in student Curriculum Vitae's.
