Student learning champions pick up national honour

An online resource that assists students to learn bibliographic referencing is one of seven University of Newcastle programs honoured by a prestigious citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council.

The Australian Learning and Teaching Council, formerly the Carrick Institute, has awarded citations for outstanding contributions to student learning to one staff team and six individuals from the University of Newcastle.

Also receiving national recognition is the University's development of a vibrant and creative culture of choral and organ music that inspires and motivates students to perform professionally at international levels.

Citations for a mathematics teacher retraining program and an innovative clinical education model for nurses are among the other achievements recognised by the awards. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Kevin McConkey, said Australian Learning and Teaching Council citations were among the most competitive higher education awards in the nation.

"These citations recognise and reward the diverse contributions that individuals and teams make to the quality of teaching and learning," Professor McConkey said.

"The national awards are strong evidence of the gifted and dedicated University staff who both challenge and support students.

"The University's students and graduates succeed because they learn in a forward-thinking environment under the guidance of some of the best academics in Australia."

Recipients will receive their awards at a ceremony in Sydney on Tuesday 5 August 2008.
