University creates vision for environmentally sustainable future

The University of Newcastle has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2015.

Staff and students will come together tomorrow at a major Forum to develop local strategies addressing the global issue of environmental sustainability.

Associate Director of Health, Safety and Environment at the University, Mrs Tina Crawford, said the University was a sector leader in environmentally sustainable energy management. "The University of Newcastle's energy consumption is 35 per cent lower than the university sector average," she said.

"Multiple strategies are now required for the sustainable management of water, transport, waste and natural resources to continue the University's leadership in the field. "The University must develop a vision owned by the entire University community," Mrs Crawford said.

To help staff and students develop these strategies, Mr Jon Dee, a prominent climate change spokesperson and the founder of Planet Ark, will address the Forum.

Mr Dee will discuss the power of a community to bring about real change by working together to adopt practices that support environmental sustainability.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nicholas Saunders, said the University was committed to sustainable development and clean energy in its operations.

"The University has had its energy management plan in place since 1997 and continues to set goals to further improve its performance in environmental sustainability.

"We can always do more to reduce our impact on the environment and we are eager to hear the thoughts of our staff and students on this very important issue."
