Analytical and Biomolecular Research Facility (ABRF)

The Analytical and Biomolecular Research Facility (ABRF) is part of the central funded Research Support Unit and comprised of the Advanced Mass Spectrometry Unit and the Biomolecular Research Facility, both located in the Life Sciences Building. In 2007 the University formed the ABRF Advisory Group which is responsible for developing an overarching strategic plan for the ABRF including items such as potential ARC LIEF and University equipment applications.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) has requested that a review be undertaken of the ABRF in August 2008. This review is to examine the current equipment and services of the ABRF and how well the ABRF meets the needs of researchers. The review will examine the cost to the University of ABRF services, including comparison with comparable services available commercially to researchers. The ideal location of current and future equipment will be considered.

Researchers were invited to participate in an online survey to assist the Review Panel by indicating use and demand of equipment located within the ABRF as well as the same equipment located elsewhere, value of the ABRF services and researchers preferred location for such equipment. The Review Panel considered these responses as well as interviews with select users and a report prepared. After consideration of these the ABRF Advisory Group submitted a report outlining their recommendations to the Research Grants and Infrastructure sub-Committee (RGIC). This has now been considered by the RGIC and further comments are invited for input prior to consideration by the Research Committee. Responses should be directed to the Faculty Assistant Dean (Research)  or Judy Alexander no later than Friday 14th November.
