Head of School Welcome
The School of Architecture and Built Environment has always had a proud history of Teaching and Learning, being the first internationally to implement Problem-Based Learning across the Architecture curriculum. The quality of this model of professional education has been proved throughout the years since its introduction in the early 1980s. The qualities of the student work displayed on this site demonstrate its success and validity.
The School has undergone a number of changes to the curriculum in recent years, but the primacy of quality student learning is still held. The School is also raising its profile as a centre for quality research activity. The University of Newcastle and especially the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment hold high standards of research, with the School of Engineering being ranked in the top 100 in the world.
Our School is broadening its research activity and success in gaining funding to support this activity. The academics and researchers in the School have contributed to in excess of 50 international publications per year over recent years. Members of the School have recently been awarded a grant to study the issues and opportunities confronting Architectural education in Australia, demonstrating the School's ability to develop the Teaching/Research nexus.
Design is a fundamental pillar of architectural practice and the School emulates this in its curricula and research. Strong design skills supported by appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes provides graduates with the capacities to play a vital role in the profession.
I welcome you to this site and hope you enjoy what it portrays of our School and its work.
