Information Technology

Do you want to work in a field that underpins everything in today's business, community and society? Do you want a career where you can explore and experiment with cutting-edge technologies? Do you have an inquisitive mind and enjoy solving challenging problems? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then information technology might just be for you.

The Information Technology degree programs at Newcastle provide professional training in all areas associated with the analysis, design, implementation, integration, maintenance and management of systems involving the application of IT. You will take a mixture of core topics and electives and be involved with extensive practical work. You can also take part in industry-relevant project work.

Our Information Technology programs are examined regularly by external reviewers - including the Australian Computer Society - to ensure that the content and the technologies being taught to, and experienced by, students are the latest available.

In addition to their research expertise, academic staff have a wide range of professional experience in industry that helps them to guide students into how the latest technology can be wisely deployed to build applications that suit the needs of the potential customers of the systems.

Our graduates are technically savvy, creative and highly employable. Many have found employment both nationally and internationally, and some have founded their own IT businesses.

Facilities

Our students study in the dedicated Information Communications Technology building, which has PC and Mac laboratories equipped with the latest computers and free wireless internet access. Students also have access to digital video editing suites, audio editing suites, a 3D laser scanner, radio studio, sound recording studio and a television studio with a multi-camera control room.

Our students have free access to download Microsoft Developer software to their own laptops that enables them to work on their assignments and projects away from the campus. They also have access to download the professional 3D animation software used in classes.

What's Happening in Information Technology?

IT skills play an increasingly vital role in almost all occupations, and contribute to productivity gains, innovation and employment growth across all Australian industries. This is leading to exciting career opportunities. The industry is now taking a front-row seat in the development of innovative solutions to many of society's most pressing issues, such as climate change and management of water resources. More than 100,000 new IT jobs have been created in the past decade alone, and the long-term career prospects for graduates continue to strengthen. While national employment levels have risen by 1.6% over the past five years, IT professionals have seen a growth of 47.6% in the ten years to May 2008.
