Centre for the Study of Research Training and Impact (SORTI)
The research, publications and other activities of this centre are directed toward the understanding and development of research and higher order problem solving skills, and the impact of research training and research outcomes, particularly in tertiary and professional learning environments.
Further strands of the Centre's work extend to the history, philosophy, and culture of research, histories of research institutions, mapping research activity and identifying research trends.

Centre for Professional Learning in Education (CPLE)
Primarily based in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle, the CPLE is focussed on conducting high quality research that informs educational policy and practice as well as some of education’s most enduring problems, particularly in the fields of:
- Quality and innovation in pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment at all levels of education
- Teacher professional learning and leadership development
- Access and equity within educational systems

Centre for Special Education and Disability Studies (CSEDS)
The Centre focuses on innovative special education and disability services in a variety of settings and also evaluates services and models in both special education and disability. This includes research, professional development, consultancies and evaluation in special education and disability, particularly sensory disability, developmental disability, intellectual disability, behaviour problems, integration and inclusion, and early childhood intervention are provided at the Callaghan campus. Renwick College at the Royal NSW Institute for Deaf and Blind Children focuses on all aspects of sensory disability.

Children and Education Research Centre (CERC)
CERC was formally opened in 2001 to serve as a focus for research in educational policy and program development relating to children. Current key research activities are in the areas of Early Literacy, Early Childhood Music, Policy Development, Indigenous Education, Linguistics and Curriculum. The Centre is located on the Ourimbah campus. This campus also hosts Yerra: Early Childhood Studies Centre, a purpose built facility shared with the Hunter Institute of Technology.
