Environmental Engineering

What is environmental engineering?

The world is full of complex environmental problems and the job of an environmental engineer is to design and manage the solutions. Environmental engineers are employed as consultants, often as part of a consulting team, to prepare environmental impact assessments for major projects, in critical analysis of these assessments, and increasingly, in the early stages of project development.

Career Options

You could find yourself working for a firm of consultants preparing environmental impact assessments for major projects or in critically analysing these assessments, perhaps for State or Local government. You might work with a regulatory authority where knowledge of pollution generation and abatement systems for various industries is important, or you may be required to devise environmentally sustainable and economic solutions. Opportunities also exist in government departments and in the mining, forestry and construction industries. All of these careers involve interaction with the environment and with people. Written and oral communication skills are essential. Employment prospects for graduates are excellent, with strong demand locally and throughout Australia.

Environmental engineering is an exceptionally important discipline – sustainable environmental solutions are crucial to the survival of the very essence of our planet.
