Honours Year

What is Honours?

The Honours program in the School of Environmental & Life Sciences (Ourimbah Campus) consists of a fourth year of full-time study (1 year) or the equivalent part-time study (2 years) for a total of 80 Credit Points. It involves a Skills Development Strand, conducting a research project (the results of which are reported in a Thesis), and may involve Advanced Studies as appropriate.

The following Honours specialisations are offered within the School of Environmental and Life Sciences (Ourimbah Campus):

  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Marine Science
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sustainable Resource Management
  • Bachelor of Science (Food Technology) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science & Physical Activity
  • Bachelor of Human Nutrition (Honours)

How do I qualify for the Honours program?

Students wishing to enrol in any of the above programs must have successfully completed a relevant undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 5.0 (credit grade average) calculated either:

  1. across the entire program; or
  2. across a major in the proposed discipline of study, if the degree program included such a major.

No more than two years must have elapsed since completion of the undergraduate degree. Students should check with Student Administration if they are unsure of their eligibility.

What are the benefits of doing Honours?

Completion of a fourth year of training is highly regarded by potential employers. Successfully completing Honours demonstrates the following outcomes, which are valued by employers:

  • Time-management and project-management skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Working independently or in a team
  • Well developed oral & written communication skills
  • An advanced knowledge in the area of specialisation
  • Knowledge and understanding of good research practice

Secondly, Honours is the traditional mode of entry into a research career. For many students it is the path to a higher research degree (MSc or PhD program).
