Applied Sciences
Research
There are currently two Research Groups in the Discipline of Applied Sciences, plus an active research focus on Exercise & Sport Science.
The Nutrition, Food & Health Research Group
Our research in Food Science & Human Nutrition encompasses both novel and traditional areas of food, nutrition and biologically active natural products. Scientists work as a cohesive and focused research entity composed of productive researchers who have a broad range of interests.
Sustainable Use of Coasts and Catchments Research Group
Research in Marine Science is conducted to support the sustainable use and conservation of the living resources and environments of coasts and catchments, the preservation of their related social values, and the development of innovative techniques, management and conservation strategies.
We have established research programmes involving staff, postgraduate and honours students, and research associates, with particular emphasis on marine conservation and sustainable use of fishery resources, indicators of estuarine health, coastal lagoon water quality and planktonic processes, impacts of floodgates on fish and invertebrates, riparian and rainforest vegetation ecology, the ecological impacts of ocean outfalls, and social sustainability. Research is also continuing, in collaboration with international donor agencies, in South Asia and the Middle East.
Current Research in Exercise & Sport Science
Research in Exercise & Sport Science is focussing on areas such as Motion Analysis of Field Sport Athletes, Biomechanics, Exercise Immunology and Women in Sport. Information about these can be found in the above website, including information about the individual researchers involved in each area.
Publications
Information about individual publications is available through the above Research Group links and in individual staff profiles.
Seminars
Regular seminars are held to share information about Biological Sciences research by staff, students and visitors. Information about upcoming topics can be found on the Applied Sciences Research Seminar Program page.
