Chemistry
Honours Year
The Honours Degree in Chemistry provides advanced training and an introduction to research and development project work. It has become the benchmark degree for those seeking work as professional chemists, as well as being required training for entry into a research degree. It is the view of the Discipline, reflected in the workplace, that four year training including Honours is a prerequisite for many positions in industry, particularly for those involving any form of product research and development or advanced problem solving.
The Honours Degree serves a number of purposes including:
- an extension of discipline knowledge at an advanced level;
- development of skills in information searching, selection and retrieval;
- project planning and management skills development;
- experimental skills development and application in a major project; and
- written and oral reporting skills development.
The research project will be in an area agreed with a supervisor(s) of your choice. Two additional academic staff (one possibly external to the Discipline) will assess the research-related assessments and the thesis.
Please download the Honours Projects for 2008 for detailed information about currently available projects.
Students interested in undertaking Honours should review the Chemistry Honours Handbook, then contact staff in their area of research interest or the Honours Coordinator
From time to time the Discipline or its research groups may offer Honours Scholarship for a stipend and/or to assist research costs for projects. In addition the University offers a series of Honours Scholarships for which students can apply.
