Size Matters: Improving Learning in Large Classes

This four hour session will offer strategies for delivering quality learning in the face of increasing diversity, and numbers of students. The session will include an overview of the problem, case studies and discussion.  Three case studies will examine student diversity, learning management and online learning.  Support materials and ideas will be supplied to enable participants to further explore ideas for large classes after the session.

 

Lunch will be included.

 

Facilitators include Dr. Sharon Cooper, Dr. Phil Jobling, Dr. Maria Northcote and Susan Grimes. 

 

Dr. Sharon Cooper, winner of Faculty of Education and Arts Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Vice Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence and Learning Support (Early Career Academic), is the First Year Coordinator for theSchool of Education.  She has had coordination and teaching responsibilities for large classes of up to 890 students.

 

Dr. Phil Jobling is winner of 2008 Faculty of Health Teaching and Staff Awards for his work with academic mentoring through the PASS project. He is responsible for implementation of the PASS academic mentoring system in the School of Biomedical Sciences. 

 

Dr. Maria Northcote, winner of the Postgraduate Teacher of the Year 2008, has extensive experience in online learning delivery.  As Senior Lecturer within the CT&L she leads the Educational

 

Susan Grimes is a Lecturer with the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Susan coordinated  large first year education courses with  750 – 883 enrolments, over a three year period.  Susan has developed a range of strategies centred on equity of experience and assessment in this large class environment.
