Research
The School of Medicine and Public Health undertakes a wide range of research with a focus on community health benefits at both a local and international level. The School has a demonstrated record of Research excellence and is made up of a team of researchers, many of whom are world-leaders within their field.
The University has established ten Priority Research Centres (PRC) to focus the research activity within the University. The PRCs that most strongly involve staff from the School of Medicine and Public Health are the Centre for Asthma and Respiratory Diseases, the Centre for Brain and Mental Health Research, the Research Centre for Gender, Health and Ageing and the Centre for Reproductive Science.
The School also undertakes research within disciplines, as well as in conjunction with a number of research groups and centres. These research groups and centres have active collaborative links with hospitals, medical practitioners, nurses, primary health care centres, aged care facilities, and the Hunter New England Area Health Service, and enjoy good collaboration through these links with communities of the Hunter Valley and Central Coast.
The School's strongest affiliation is with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) which was formed in 1998 as a strategic partnership between the University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Health and the Hunter community. HMRI, which provides an umbrella organisation for medical research in the Hunter, is now a multi-campus network of over 350 researchers based at either the University or the Area Health Service and is recognised as one of Australia's most innovative health and medical research institutes. It is the only one in Australia located outside a major capital city and HMRI has pioneered the integration of multi-campus university and hospital-based research.
Through links in both education and research, the School endeavours to ensure that the research undertaken will be of relevance, and make a lasting and positive contribution to the health of the Hunter and Central Coast communities, Australia and beyond. Our goal is to create a better life for humanity through medical research.
