Bachelor of Psychology, PhD (Health Psychology)

Why did you choose to study Health Psychology at Newcastle?
Newcastle is like a big country town with a beach and a great climate. The people are friendly and the University staff are wonderful.

What was the best thing about the Psychology program?
Because I'm heading back to the country, the degree I'm doing gives me everything I could need. I will have a PhD and be able to do research, as well as having clinician skills and registration to practice as a Psychologist. I've also found the coursework enormously beneficial for my research. I think I'm getting the best of both worlds - plus I'm working with great people who are passionate about what they are doing.

How did you find the support and service of staff at the University?
The Academic staff are professional and supportive. I admire their passion and dedication to their jobs. I've made some very good friends at the Uni, particularly the general staff within the School of Psychology: they are worth their weight in gold.

Where are you currently working and what are you currently doing? How has your Psychology degree helped you in your professional life?
I'm working hard and focused on my research. I'm also doing a placement at the University of Newcastle Psychology Clinic. I really enjoy this because not only am I learning high quality counselling skills, I'm working with a great bunch of people - some of which I've known since undergrad. I also enjoy tutoring. I find working with other keen students terribly rewarding and motivating.

What advice would you give to future students considering studying Psychology at Newcastle?
No one person earns a degree by themselves. It is a team effort. Family, friends and Uni staff all help to keep the wheels turning at different times. I've found it very important to have a strong social support network. It's also great to give back the support to others when it's needed: whether it is staff, fellow students or complete strangers. If someone needs help: give it. If you need help: don't be afraid to ask for it.
