• How do I get into a program?

  • There are several different options for getting into university - you should explore these at the Pathways to the University web page.

  • If you are interested in getting into a particular degree and would like some more information, you should contact the Faculty directly.

• Which program should I do?
  • Talk to Faculty Program Advisors about program structures, gaining entry and possible credit for previous study.

   

• I need help with course (subject) choice…
  • If you would like some help deciding on which courses you should do, check out the Undergraduate or Postgraduate Handbooks on the website to see what your options are within your program.
  • If you want to discuss possible career implications with course choice, book an appointment to discuss this with a Careers Counsellor.

   

• How do I get into a particular occupation?
  • If you are interested in a particular occupation and would like some information on how to get qualified, check out the DEST Jobguide

 

Finding a Job

• How do I find a job?

  • Good question!! There are several places you should look if you are looking for work. Check out online job search options, check the newspapers, talk to people and network, contact employers directly and utilise services such as those offered by Careers and Student Employment.

• Can you help me with my resume?
  • Yes, we have an information booklet with examples to help you write your resume and a Resume Checking service for you to discuss your resume, job application or cover letter.
• Can you help me with my interview preparation?
  • Yes - we have a booklet on Interview techniques in our office and if you like you can book in for a practice interview session - held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

   

• Can you help me find a part-time job?
  • Yes! The Careers Office has a part-time vacancy service for current students (those with a student card) which consists of a part-time email group and copies of ads in folders located in the Careers office. The staff do not match students with jobs, so it is up to you to register with our service and then regularly check your email or come into our office and check for any vacancies that may be suitable.

   

• I am finishing my degree this year. What should I be doing?

  • If you are in your final year of your degree, or finish mid year next year, you should be thinking about employment options. The Careers Office can help with this - check out the Information for Final Year Students page for information on what you should be doing!

• I am a recent graduate, can you help me?
  • Yes we can! You are welcome to use the services provided by the Careers Office. We can help you with getting your resume ready and preparing for interviews. We also advertise immediate vacancies that are suitable for graduates. We list vacancies suitable for graduates on our web pages. More information can be found in our office in the Graduate folder and you should also register your email if you would like to receive information on vacancies directly.

   

• How do I find vacation work?

  • There are several options when looking for vacation work. Some larger companies have recruitment programs for vacation work. You can find out about these on our Course Related Vacancies page. The vacancies on this page can also be emailed out to you if you register your email address. The Graduate Opportunities book which is available in the Careers Office or online also lists larger companies who have vacation work recruitment programs.

  • The Careers Office runs workshops that are available to all students regarding vacation work and how to approach it.

  • You can also approach companies that you are interested in directly. If you would like some advice about this, book in for an appointment to have a chat with a Careers Counsellor.

• It says I need an application form…where do I get one?

  • If the company you are applying to has a website, check online to see if there is an application form. If the web page or job ad indicates that the Careers Office has an application form, there is a stand in the office that has all our application forms.

• Can you help me with writing my resume?
  • Yes, we have an information booklet with examples to help you write your resume and a Resume Checking service for you to discuss your resume, job application or cover letter.

  • You need to book an appointment online, or by phoning the Careers office.

  Am I insured for voluntary work experience?

  • • If you gain paid work experience, you should be covered by the employer. If you gain voluntary work experience, you may need to look at the insurance policy that is offered by the University.

     

    • Do you have information on overseas work and study programs or volunteer opportunities?
      • We have some brochures in our office and a page with links to relevant web sites. For more information, come into our office.
