Work Visas: International students cannot start work without a permission to work visa issued by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMIA) Further information is available at www.immi.gov.au/study/working/how_to_apply.htm

Your Tax File Number: A unique Tax File Number (TFN) issued by the Australian taxation Office (ATO) identifies income earners in Australia. International students are advised to see the International Office on campus for further information on obtaining a TFN. Further information is available at http://www.ato.gov.au/

Are you a permanent resident for Tax purposes? Each employer will ask you to complete a declaration form that asks if you are a resident for tax purposes. If so, you pay standard tax rates and may claim a refund at the end of the financial year (30 June). Self-assess your status by completing the questionnaire on the ATO website www.ato.gov.au  Study Abroad and exchange students who are here for one semester only may not be residents for Tax purposes.

What will you earn:  Official wage rates and conditions jobs should be checked on NSW Office of Industrial Relations website www.industrialrelations.nsw.gov.au or phone 131 628 (State Award) or Dept of Workplace Relations website www.dewr.gov.au phone 1300 363 264 (Commonwealth). Award wages vary depending on the job and your age (junior wages refer to people 20 years and younger)

Lodge a Tax Return: Taxpayers/income earners are required to lodge tax returns. Each employer will keep a record of your payments and send a summary to you at the end of the financial year (30 June).  Ensure your employer is kept informed if you change address. International students leaving Australia before 30 June should enquire at the ATO at least 6-8 weeks before departure about tax return lodgement.

What do employers want? Employers expect you to be enthusiastic about the job and understand the requirements. Most casual jobs need you to be work ready and have some basic job skills eg business/customer service communication skills, reliability, computer skills. Sometimes specific skills are required eg to work anywhere in NSW involving alcohol requires a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate (RSA), see below for training courses.

What should employers provide? A safe work environment with no harassment or discrimination and fair pay for the work that you do. Be wary of unpaid work trials- they do not always lead to work. Voluntary work is great for your resume and can build your skills. Do make sure that you understand the conditions and that the experiences are worthwhile.  Be wary of ‘Unpaid trials’ – they do not always lead to paid work
