The University of Newcastle undertook a pilot of the Lectopia system in Semester 2, 2005. Developed by the University of Western Australia, Lectopia allows for the automatic recording of lectures.
Lecturers can book a Lectopia enabled venue for their lecture and the Lectopia system automatically captures all audio and PC and Visualiser materials presented during that lecture. Once the lecture has finished, the recording is usually processed and ready within a couple of hours for students to access via Blackboard.
Why use Lectopia?
Making your lectures available online offers many benefits to students such as:
- Opportunities for students to revise difficult concepts
- Allowing greater flexibility for students with timetable clashes or work/family commitments
- Providing the opportunity for revision before examinations
Lecturers simply complete both a Lectopia registration and booking form, book a Lectopia enabled venue, turn up and push a button to begin the Lectopia recording process. Lecturers then proceed to deliver their lecture as usual. At the end of the session, Lectopia automatically stops recording and starts to process the lecture. The lecturer receives an email advising when the Lectopia recording is ready. The lecturer can then add a link to their recording from their course in Blackboard. Students can then access the Lectopia recording from within their Blackboard course.
