The Lectopia system was developed at the University of Western Australia UWA in the context of a changing higher education climate. Increasingly students are seeking and demanding more flexible options for accessing university programmes. In addition to this, funding pressures and globalization are leading universities to expand the offering of their programmes into overseas markets. These factors have lead to operational priorities that focus on flexible delivery and internationalization. At the same time the University of Newcastle has introduced regional programmes in Port Macquarie and Tamworth.
As more students enrol ‘off campus’ (regional and offshore) for programmes offered by the University of Newcastle, it has become imperative to ensure that they too have equitable access to online resources and print learning material. Blackboard has been pivotal in providing a means of retrieving recorded lectures.
The Lectopia system has been designed to stream lectures to students so they can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Students find the system to be immensely helpful when there are timetable clashes, personal or work commitments that prevent them from attending lectures and in reinforcing complex points.
The Lectopia system automatically captures all audio and PC/Visualiser materials present during a lecture. Once the lecture has finished, the recorded lecture is usually processed and ready within a couple of hours for students to access online via Blackboard.
