The University of Newcastle Library is a unit of the Academic Division, under the guidance of Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Kevin McConkey and the University Librarian, Mr Greg Anderson.
The Library is central to the University’s academic and community endeavour. Our vision is of a quality learning space where people are inspired to explore, research, create, reflect and grow.
Services and facilities are delivered through libraries on the Callaghan, City, Ourimbah and Port Macquarie campuses, and at the Singapore campus. A rapidly expanding online environment also ensures we are able to provide support to students wherever they live, and 24 x7 services mean staff are available around the clock.
The Auchmuty Library, named for Foundation Vice-Chancellor, Professor J.J. Auchmuty, is our main base. As well as housing traditional collections, including rare books and archives, information services and study facilities, it is home to the Information Common. This is a vibrant and informal work and learning space, with strong design elements, collaborative layouts for computing, and 24 hour access and first-level IT support. Social elements include a café and vending machines, lounge areas, and provision of newspapers. The information enquiry service is also available 24 hours a day via phone, email, SMS or in person.
The City Library is located on the first floor of University House, an Art Deco heritage building in the Newcastle CBD. University House was refurbished in 1995 to accommodate the library services and collections of the Faculty and Conservatorium of Music. It now also supports the Graduate School of Business and the Newcastle Legal Centre, situated in the same building. The City Hub and Information Common are on the ground floor of University House, also offering 24 x7 service.
The Huxley Library, on the Callaghan Campus, as is the Auchmuty, is named for former principal, Doug Huxley. It primarily supports Education, Nursing, and Fine Arts, with specialist collections such as the Toy Library and the Curriculum Resource and Media Centre.
The Ourimbah Campus is a joint University-TAFE campus. The Ourimbah Library supports both University and TAFE disciplines and courses offered on campus, and is a model for future collaborative or joint-use library facilities. The Ourimbah Library also offers a 24 x7 service from May 2008.
