Description

Literature Online is a fully searchable library of over 250,000 works of English and American literature, overseen by an academic Advisory Board. This serivce brings together Chadwyck-Healey's literary full-text databases:

Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (1920-1997)
Comprises over 500,000 records including books, journal articles, critical editions of literary works, books reviews, collections of essays and doctoral dissertations published anywhere in the world from 1920-1997.

The Bible in English (990-1970)
20 different versions of the English Bible from the tenth to the twentieth century, including 12 full Bibles, 5 New Testament texts, 2 versions of the Gospels only, and William Tyndale's translations of the Pentateuch, Jonah and the New Testament

Early English Prose Fiction (1500-1700)
Accesses over 200 complete items of prose fiction written between 1500 and 1700 .

Editions and Adaptations of Shakespeare (1591-1911)
Eleven major editions from the First Folio to the Cambridge edition of 1863-6, twenty-four separate contemporary printings of individual plays, selected apocrypha and related works and more than one hundred adaptations, sequels and burlesques from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Eighteenth-Century Fiction (1700-1780)
77 complete works in English prose from the period 1700-1780, by writers from the British Isles. Includes a scanned version of Sterne's Tristram Shandy, and two different editions of Richardson's Clarissa and Pamela and of Swift's Gulliver's Travels.

English Drama (1280-1915)
A combination of Chadwyck-Healey's English Verse Drama and English Prose Drama full-text databases. 4,000 plays by 1,200 authors from the late thirteenth century to the early twentieth century.

English Poetry (600-1900)
Essentially the complete English poetic canon from 600 to 1900. Over 165,000 poems by more than 1,250 poets drawn from nearly 4,500 printed sources.

Faber Poetry Library
Works by some of the major poets of the twentieth century. Covers the seventy-year operations of this major publisher, and comprises 124 volumes by 42 poets, including Joyce, Sassoon, Eliot, Hughes, Plath and Healey.

The King James Bible The King James - 'Authorized' Version is included to provide a single Bible for reference purposes.

Literary Theory
Spans the history of literary theory and criticism from Plato to the present, including over 800 works by more than 350 authors. These include formal treatises on criticism, essays and manifestos, literary prefaces, theories of imagination, taste and aesthetics, and major examples of contemporary theory.

Nineteenth-Century Fiction
Contains 250 novels from 1786 to 1900, comprising works by all the major Victorian novelists, as well important works of Gothic and other fiction from the Romantic period. Concentrates on fiction published between 1786 and 1839.

Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged
America's premier lexicographical work, the 1993 edition is published here in electronic form for the first time. A dictionary of the English language containing 450,000 vocabulary entries.
