1. When would I need to use a library database?

The library databases contain references to articles published in journals, magazines and newspapers. Some also contain references to book reviews, conference proceedings, reports, book chapters and other publications.

You will need to use a library database when you have an assignment to do, and you need to find journal articles on a particular topic.

2. How do I access the library databases?

The library databases can be accessed from the Library's alphabetical index of Journal & Reference Databases.  You will be prompted to enter your library number and PIN to access a database if you are connecting from off-campus.

3. I am a staff member - what is my library number?

When you register to join the Library, you are provided with a library card.  Your library number is printed on this card.

4. I am a student - what is my library number?

Your library number is the same as your student number, which is printed on your student card.

5. What is a library PIN?

It is a Personal Identification Number, created by you, which is used in conjunction with your library number to access online library resources, including databases.
Create a PIN if you have not already done so.

6. How do I know which database to search?

Select a subject from the drop-down list, to view a list of databases relevant to that subject area.  Alternatively, ask a librarian at one of the Library Information Desks, or speak to your lecturer for recommendations.

7. Can I get the full text of a journal article from the database?

Some databases do provide the full text of journal articles.  Click here to view a listing of these.
If the full text is not available in the database, you will need to do a Journal Title search in NEWCAT to see if the Library has the print version of the journal in which the article is published.

8. Can I access the library databases from home?

Yes, if you have internet access at home. You will need to enter your library number and PIN.

9. What do I do if I get an error message when trying to access a database?

Sometimes a database may be temporarily unavailable due to Internet connectivity or network problems. As this may only be momentary, try again a few more times. Other problems may be caused by technical difficulties at the supplier's site. If this is the cause it is difficult to predict exactly when access will be restored.  If the problem persists, please report it through ASAPinfo.
