RADIATION SAFETY MANUAL
Section 4: Purchasing Procedures

INDEX
4.1 Radioactive Materials
4.2 Irradiating Apparatus

4.1 RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS
Suppliers of radioactive substances and irradiating equipment should only sell to licensed persons. However It is the Institution that holds the license to hold and sell (and purchase isotopes). The number that should be quoted to the supplier if requested is 27393. A complete central record of all purchases must be maintained and monitored. The particulars of the radioactive substances should also be recorded on an inventory held at the place of storage. At the time of placing the order a copy of the order or credit card confirmation should be sent to the URSO, Dr. David Kay (Fax 17411, David.Kay@newcastle.edu.au)

4.2 IRRADIATING APPARATUS
Irradiating apparatus is ordered using normal procedures, however, each purchase or intended purchase should be notified prior to order, the Radiation Safety Committee via the University Radiation Safety Officer.

Designs of installations where radiation will be used, or modifications to existing installations, should be submitted to the University Radiation Safety Officer for checking of shielding and reporting to the Radiation Technical Sub-Committee before the design is finalised.

It must be emphasised that all irradiating apparatus installations are subject to review by the EPA who may and will prevent their operation if they are not satisfied with radiation safety measures. For advice contact the University Radiation Safety Officer.
