Core Skills for Graduates

The Core Skills for Graduates is a set of generic skills or attributes that define the University's expectations of its graduates. Integration of the core skills into all academic programs is a part of the program review process which occurs every 4 years.

Core Skills for Graduates

Graduates of The University of Newcastle will have demonstrated that they are able to:

A) Act with honesty and integrity and with well-founded knowledge and skills in their fields of study.

B) Acquire, organise and present information.

C) Respect the pursuit of knowledge by reflecting on and continuing to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes.

D) Think logically, laterally, critically and creatively; analyse and synthesise.

E) Act effectively and ethically in decision-making and problem-solving.

F) Carry out research activities.

G) Communicate honestly and effectively as members of their communities.

H) Work autonomously and collaboratively.

I) Utilise information technology appropriately and competently.

J) Seek improvement in organisational, social and cultural contexts, in an ethical manner.

K) Recognise social, cultural, physical and intellectual diversity, including the history and diversity of Australian indigenous peoples.

L) Recognise and respond appropriately to globalisation and other changes of context.

M) Recognise human impact on the environment, and its implications for environmental sustainability.

NURAPID - reflective practice online journal

NURAPID is a web based application designed to record the development of skills and competencies of undergraduate students throughout their academic careers and beyond. Students record their learning and can produce evidence of acquired skills and competencies.

Based on the RAPID project developed by the Department of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough University, UK and the UK Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), NURAPID is used by the Schools of Architecture and Built Environment, Nursing and Midwifery and Education who are supporting the integration of core skills into their programs with this tool.

InfoSkills

InfoSkills is a self-paced online tutorial designed to introduce University of Newcastle undergraduate students to the concepts of academic integrity and information literacy (assisting students in the acquisition of skills a, b, d, f and i above). InfoSkills contains five modules that can be undertaken separately or together and are designed for integration into courses (e.g. via links in Blackboard with appropriate discipline-specific assessments).

InfoSkills aims to inform students what constitutes good academic practice in writing and research. University expectations regarding academic practice are identified and explained.
