About Turnitin

Turnitin can be accessed via your Blackboard Course when your lecturer has set up a Turnitin Assignment - usually under the "Assignments" menu item.

Turnitin is an online text matching software system for educators and students.

It is important to be aware that Turnitin does not make judgments on whether plagiarism has occurred, rather it is a tool that can assist in learning the conventions of academic writing for your coursework.

If you are required to submit your assignment into Turnitin, your assignment will be compared against:

• The Internet

• Papers submitted to Turnitin by other students, including students of the University of Newcastle and many other universities

• Proquest online journal collection databases.

The analysis of this comparison generates an 'originality report' which will identify any portion of similiar or matching text between the submitted work and items in Turnitin. You can use the 'orginality report' to help you decide when referencing is needed. To find out more about referencing see InfoSkills.

Students accept as a condition of enrolment "that any essays they submit may be checked for plagiarism, including through an electronic system, and be held in the database for future matching purposes and protection of your work against copying by others".
