The University recognises that during your program of study, illness or other serious circumstances beyond your control may affect your preparation for or performance in an end of term or end of year examination or assessment item.
In such circumstances you should complete the online form at https://intraweb.newcastle.edu.au/sc/Pages/Login.aspx if it involves a major assessment item with a value that is 20% or more of the final result:
Consideration of special circumstances requiring extension of time or special consideration.
The online application form should be completed if:
- you are seeking an extension of time for the submission or presentation of a major assessment item because of special circumstances OR
- you have attempted a major assessment item, but your preparation or performance was adversely affected OR
- you have attempted all assessment items in a course, a number of which were adversely affected by the same adverse circumstances.
It must be submitted no later than 3 working days after the due date of your last assessment item or examination.
Consideration of special circumstances requiring rescheduling of an examination
The online application form should be completed if:
- you are requesting the rescheduling of an examination that you will be unable to attend, or you are prevented from attempting an examination at the scheduled date. It must be submitted no later than 10 working days prior to the first date of the examination period.
The online application form coversheet must be accompanied by the required evidence and submitted to a Student Hub.

Where circumstances affect a student's performance in an assessment task that is not a major assessment item (ie. not valued at 20% or more of the final result), students do not complete the above online application form.
Application is made for minor assessment items in writing, preferably via email, to the course coordinator.
