Managing for Performance Evaluation

Background

At the beginning of 2008 the Vice-Chancellor listed an evaluation of Managing for Performance (MFP) as one of the priorities for the year. The DVC(S) approved an evaluation approach in March 2008 with a view to implementation occurring later in the year and following the Evaluation of 2005 Administrative Changes (given the degree of staff input required on both evaluations).

The AUQA Audit Report, whilst recognising the "University's assessment that UoN is well on its way to achieving a cultural shift"< also encouraged the University to continue its focus on engagement and sustainability of MFP over the longer term and proceed with "a proposed review to improve the process."

Reference Group

Implementation of the MFP Evaluation is now underway and is being led by a reference group comprising:

Dr Sue Gould, DVC (S) (Julie Craig, Assistant DVC (S), Acting)

Professor Bill Hogarth, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Science and IT

Professor Bill Purcell, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International)

Professor Mark Jones, Head of School, School of Engineering

Associate Professor John Germov, Head of School, School of Humanities and Social Science

Beverley Richards, Associate Director, Organisational Development (Project Manager)

Yvonne Hooper, HRS Project Officer

Staff Survey

Eligible University staff will have an opportunity to participate in the Evaluation via a staff survey that will be distributed electronically on 8 September 2008. Those identified as eligible staff are:

Surveys will not be distributed to staff for whom MFP is not compulsory, ie

Please contact Yvonne Hooper, email: Yvonne.Hooper@newcastle.edu.au if you fall into one of the categories for which MFP is not compulsory but would still like the opportunity to complete the survey.

Executive Committee Interviews and Focus Groups

As part of the evaluation, several members of the Executive Committee will be interviewed and asked to provide feedback on MFP from their own perspective. A series of staff focus groups held at Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses will give staff further opportunity to contribute.

Evaluation Summary

A summary of the MFP Evaluation will be presented to the Executive Committee at the end of October 2008.  Reports on 2008 MFP participation rates will also be presented to the Executive Committee at this point. The participation rate figure will be compiled in September (paper based system and MFP Online).

MFP Cycles for 2008 and 2009

Staff should sign off their 2008 MFP cycle in November / December 2008. Staff Performance and Development plans for 2009 should be finalised by February 2009.
